Between or Beyond [MPS, 1970]

Between or Beyond -- a perfect title for the kind of grooves coming from pianist Mike Nock on this set -- the New Zealand player's rare outing for MPS! The album's got Mike playing as much electric piano as acoustic -- all in a style that's between straight and out, and far beyond some of his previous work, however great that might be. There's a definite influence here from the trippier sides of the spectrum, and Nock's often quite content to let his keyboard open up and find some groovy space on its own -- slowly unfurling in the MPS freedoms, and getting great support from bassist Ron McClure and drummer Eddie Marshall. All tunes are originals by the group, and the styles range from spacier moments to some more modal and funkier numbers.
