Five + Four [Peer, 1975/Yellow, 1996]
|
Five + Four, originally an extremely rare set of big-band funkiness, was reissued by France's Yellow label in '96. The grooves, as designed by Al Newman, are tight and succinct (none of the 12 cuts break the four minute mark) and evoke the finer slices of the DeWolfe and KPM sound library records. Adorned with a slappin' rhythm section and the usual keyboard touchstones (Rhodes, Clavinet, ARP, et al), this record is heavy on the beats but falls short of any real transportation, owing to the frustrating brevity of each cut.
