Awakening tends well towards the latter part of the Kozmigroov Duality but man, these are some great jams! "IBO" is a testament to the simple elevating power of percussion and chanting and "Great House" locks into an amazing polyrhythm for a healthy duration. Although it's said that some of these players eventually joined EWF, the only name I recognize is Don Myrick. [DW]
In the Basement is looser & wilder than Awakening. I still get a very definite Arkestra-gone-funk vibe from much of their stuff; but it's true, it is difficult to strictly define what's kozmik when you take away the obvious signposts (analog synths, electric saxes, trippy overdubs). But hey, if you liked Awakening, definitely look for In the Basement. [JW]
