Total Space [MPS, 1975]
|
Total Space - One of the trippiest records ever led by a clarinetist -- a hip funky fusion outing that's right up there with better-known MPS dates of the time! Rolf Kuhn's in the lead on clarinet, but it's the rest of the group who really get things going here -- a powerful Euro fusion lineup that includes Gerd Dudek on tenor and soprano sax, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Joachim Kuhn on electric piano, and Philip Catherine on guitar -- all driven on strongly by drums from Kasper Winding and Daniel Humair, and bass from Bo Steif! A larger horn group joins in at points, pushing the record into funky fusion big band territory at points -- and the groove is in the headiest, most full-on MPS fusion groove of the time -- as you might guess from the already-electric cover image. Titles include "Total Space", "Miss Maggie", "Uncle Archibald", and "Buzz"
