Recorded in 1972 with Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, and Jack DeJohnette, Joe Farrell's _Moon Germs_ was a foray into the electric side of jazz. Recorded two months after the LP debut of Chick Corea's _Return To Forever_, it reflects Farrell's connection to that seminal group. The music is more progressive than groove-oriented and certainly reflects that knotty, angular, almost mathematic penchant that Corea's group was known for. The group fused together perfectly, with a tight combo sound that is far more energetic than most CTI jazz from the time. Farrell plays both flute and soprano sax with frenetic electricity throughout . Farrell uses his flute and Hancock strides into the same kind of territory he explored with Miles Davis and his early 70's group, chopping up chordal phrases into single lines and feeding them wholesale to the running pair frontmen in Clarke and Farrell. "Bass Folk Song" the most kozmigroov oriented of the tunes is by Clarke, and is the only thing on the record that actively engages melody rather than harmonic structures. It is also the source for a sweet bass sample used by Four Tet.

I roomed with Joe in college. I was saddened to loose him. If Joe, Jr. reads this I would love to hear from him. gkaplanlaw@aol.com

I agree with Ken Diggins posting. I may have even played with Ken on "Night Time in New Guinie" if this is the same one.
