Hi. I stumbled upon your site while researching some information about cafepress. Having been a user since 2002 and having seen and experienced the evolution of the interface over time, I have to say that your UI project was a success. More tools to upload multiple images would be great (I'm currently doing a new site with monograms--so I have 26 versions of every design...ugh) I love what you did, however, and think it took the functionality and ease up quite a few notches. I just sent your portfolio link to a friend who's looking for a UI and information architect. Good luck (I'll spare you the shameless self promotion of posting my site URL here.)

after recommending Supersilent for inclusion i think its time also you looked at the almighty Tortoise. Yes, they're essentially an instrumental 'postrock' act but they've incorporated more than their fair share of jazzrockfusion, hip hop, dub and funky electronica to warrant some interest? heck, if you can feature Jaga Jazzist then these fellows are a must....they're one of the godfathers of all this mind!!!

I hope somebody will put it on Yourtube or something, it was nice.

At last year's PopKomm in Berlin, Germany, the freshest thing I heard for a very, very long time was a French Jazz Band called "Wise". They stem from Paris and don't even have a decent web site (http://www.naive.fr/artiste_naive.php?id=104 ). Their music is great anyway. As far as I know, they only turned out one record so far: "Electrology" (2003, Label: naive, ISBN: 3298490506110 - perhaps not the frist and the last digits). The centere of the band is a) the trumpet player Guillaume Poncelet who uses a Moog low pass filter and an analog Moog echo to alter the sound of his trumpet live, b) Robin Notte who really works his Fender Rhodes, and c) Julien Briot who supplies loops from his iBook with abelton's live. Their drummer bears great resemblence of the "animal" at the muppet's show. An impressing, modern version of kosmic Jazz. If they would only play Germany more often and if they'd only record their stuff more often. The first song of their record reminds me in a way of "The Re-Birth of the Cool" in a contemporary interpretation. Most other songs are either Bee-Bob like in their energy or very relaxed with d&b sounds and even a few Hip-Hip vocals. Definitely no Smooth-Jazz or Acid Jazz. Not neccessarily lounge compatible, since it forces you too much to listen to it. Great if music is the center!

1-3 (three cds worth of skullfookin noisejazz blizzards!!!)

4 (dark calm meets taut hyperkinetic sonic brutality)

5 (their most ambient work but hardly easy stuff...full of foreboding intensity)

6 (the most accessible and soundtrack-like.....glacial beauty)

7 (the concert dvd that shld rightfully be the last damn word on such releases......beautifully filmed in bnw....awesome powerful sound.....the music builds and grows so naturally from its canvas of silence into epic catastrophic rockouts!!! this one totally slays.......)

so there!!!!!

Hello, been a good view years since I was last here. Anyway, something I'm listening to right now is worthy of Kozmigroove - "At The Helm" by the East New York Ensemble De Music (Folkways 1974). A fantastic spiritual jazz LP that draws heavily on eastern musical forms. Four songs of fantastic beauty including a 13 minute renditon of Freddie Hubbard's "SunFlower". Re-released on CD in 2004.

I must come back on your site for explaining my thoughts.
The point is that it must be clear in your mind that kozmigroov wouldnt be without "soul". That's why i'm a little chocked by not finding a reference to "Donny Hathaway - I love the lord, he heard my cry" from Extensions of a man ... yeah, extensions of a man outer space. Same feeling of despite concerning "Webster Lewis - would you believe" from Live at club 7, that is a very transcendant.

A+ !

A few important anecdotes about fat 70's production situations. In the autobiography of Motown's founder Berry Gordy "To be loved", Berry describes how he walked into the sessions for the song "Let's get it on" when it was in playback in the early stages, and to his ears it had the right feel, mostly due to the fatness of the entire sound and Marvin's voice particularly. Marvin and the producer told Berry that they had more touches to add to "improve" it, but Berry knew that it had to be kept as it was right then because that right there and then just hit it out the park. So Marvin and the producer made Berry a copy of the song at that point and continued to work on it. When Marvin and the producer came back with the "improved" version, Berry could hear the extra touches thinning and compromising the fattness he wisely captured on his copy/tape when he was there and Marvin and the producer couldn't deny it either when Berry compared his tape to their "improvement".

Another important 70's production situation is the Ohio Players. They have a few fat tracks on '72's "Pain", '73's "Pleasure" and almost overall on '73's "Ecstasy", yet '74's "Skin Tight" is an achievement totally beyond those, very startling and unique. The later LP's that count (except for maybe a slight attempt to correct things on '76's "Contradiction") '74's "Fire", '75's "Honey", '76's "Angel" and '77's "Mr. Mean", sort of made that mistakes Marvin and Ed the "Let's Get it on" producer were eager to make so garrishly that I personally just credit them for retaining their identity (they sort of lost their identity soundwise with '78's "Jass-e-lay-dee") with such a reckless disregard (esp. the introduction of sugary synths) for what worked obviously in classic "Ecstasy", "Skin Tight" Lp's.

Ironically, I read in a web posting on a Funk music site, that Funk Fans began to lose esteem for the Ohio Players when those overdone songs (probably off of "Fire" and "Honey") didn't sound the same in concert and that people thought they were too much of a studio band. The song "Is anybody going to be saved?" off of "Skin Tight" however, probably wouldn't have been hard to pull off live and that song has Sugarfoot's fattest guitar sound (he really got into thin, cold or barely audible guitar work after the "Skin Tight" LP) and overall that song is really fat. That song is so fat, you can almost picture being in the studio with them, what clothes they would be wearing, what type of weather it would be outside, etc. (sort of like how Mudhoney's "Tomorow Hit Today" sounds like being up close in the studio with the band but their "My Brother the Cow" CD sounds like you're listening to them in the back of a concert hall at some distance). The way the Ohio Players composed, performed and produced "Is Anybody going to be saved?" makes it stand out: not too busy, lot's of breathing room and for each instrument, the bass is well-defined (not blending in nebulously with/under/above? anything) it is not trying to impress anybody (like their later uptempo songs definitely seem geared towards increasingly), "Is anybody going to be saved?" is just a grand-slam all around for fattness.

So those are examples how artists/bands/producers can be on track and go off track in terms of the power of Fattness. Let us learn from the 70's overall, especially the Ohio Players, because it's unlikely anyone could get away with some of the stuff they tried soundwise after the "Skin Tight" LP and still be held in esteem.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that one of their better Cd's "Shack Man" sounded like they were going for a "cute" thing on some of the songs, whereas something truly fat in an impressive way can't easily be reduced to a "cute" tag [because the fattness is done with an eye towards creating tension/overwhelming/standing out]. The new stuff "The Dropper", "Unvisible" sounds more stretched out but tension might be too underdeveloped-not pronounced enough.

"You know, you know", "Dance of the Maya", etc.

Medeski, Martin & Wood are great but they more or less combine the Meters and Thelonious MOnk (in the right way) on their better Cd's. The new sound they are doing (which seems to be moving from that fat/centered thing they made a name with themselves with) hasn't seemed to match that yet. I guess I'm wanting them to go into the Jan Hammer thing with a Fender Rhodes played through a ring modulator like Jan on the classic "Dance of the Maya" because Medeski didn't choose too much to be as wild with MMW on the organ as he was on "Lunar Crush".

I also want to say that the Meters is the ultimate in full/centered Funk [their classic late 60's/early 70's stuff. Parliament/Funkadelic mainly for "UP for downstroke, Chocolate City, Clones of Dr. Funkenstein] I would have "Headhunters" on my a-list [thrust is good but too polished]. I love "There's a Riot going on" more than Sly's stuff before or after. Obviously, a person's taste could like War, James Brown, Isley's for their merits, but I like to emphasize the centered thing.

After that my thing is too be ultra finicky with full/centered late 60's/early 70's pop/rock/: Three Dog NIght, 5th Dimension, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Delfonics/Thom Bell [while some would be into the O'jay's/Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes version of Philly Soul, like Jan Hammer over Herbie, Delfonics is WAY over O'jays/Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, if only slightly over Stylistics/Spinners]

Then, I go to the extremes of loving/being ultra finicky with appreciating what is called muzak/lounge pop/easy listening: Robert Maxwell (harpist), Andre Kostelanetz, Hugo Winterhalter (maybe Arthur Lyman as well) to wild rock: The Amps (Kim Deal-Pacer), Jonathan Fire*Eater [the musicians of that great band, Paul Maroon, the modern Mclaughlin to me, and Walter Martin organist (more extreme than the average rock organist-if no Medeski-plus adept at atmospherics using a rickety pedal steel on top of his keyboard-if no Larry Young, and the incredible Matt Barrick on drums, are now in the band called The Walkmen who have had moderate success, more than Jonathan Fire*Eater], Slint, Verve "A Storm in Heaven", Fugazi "End Hits", Unwound "Repetition", Slint "Tweez", "Spiderland" and Punk/HardCore: Meat Puppets (self-titled 1st Cd), Circle Jerks "Wild in the Streets" (has a sound that breathes and is more organically comfortable than exhausting/draining punk/Hardcore (if you're fool enough like me to have spent energy looking for more and more good punk/HardCore bands as opposed to space age lounge pop LP's/Cd's), Black Flag's "Damaged", late era Bad Brains stuff: "I against I", "Quickness", "God of Love". Restrained rock: Karate (great jazz rock/experimental band). The Fire Theft (self-titled CD: many songs from the band this band evolved from, Sunny Day Real Estate, are great especially songs off is LP2-especially "Iscarabaid" and off of "How it feels to be Something ON" are good, but I'm too finicky to fully endorse those Lp's/Cd's-too much power chords without the touch Bad Brains have or Kim Deal/Amps showed on most of the best songs on "Pacer" and of course, Paul Maroon's [Jonathan Fire Eater/Walkmen] perfect touch for non-powerchord rock).

Soft jazz/pop/rock: Phoebe Snow (self-titled 1st LP/CD), Second Childhood, Deniece Williams "This is Niecy" (one of the best things Earth Wind and Fire were involved in).

Modern Soul: Erykah Badu, "Mama's Gun, Worldwide Underground.

Misc. Ramones "Road to Ruin", "Leave HOme", "Rocket to Russia", Mudhoney "Tomorow Hit Today", Bread "Manna","Baby I'ma want you", "Guitar Man", Silver Convention "SAve Me" and your Jimi's, Stevie's, etc.

I'm beginning to place Rare EArth as my imperfect Three Dog Night in this scheme of things [Three Dog NIght is my centered/central thing at the moment for sound].

My point in all this, is to say I'm happy I'm far from exhaustively seeking punk/HardCore Lp's/Cd's anymore and realize that to be centered in a sound worth being centered in Robert Maxwell-late 50's/Thelonious Monk-62-68/Meters-69-73/Three Dog Night-69-72/OHio Players-72-77/Parliament-74-76/Karate 98-present can help a music lover put music in its proper place and maybe even use music to glorify and worship Holy Adonai Messiah Y'shua, Son of the Holy Heavenly Father [I might have to make my own gospel with my taste in music, if not the Al Green/Deniece Williams version].

I think you're on the right track in terms of connecting with people with your musical tastes and vision (which is more compelling than the usual prog-rock-Rush-Yes-King Crimson-Emerson Lake and Palmer enthusiasts or the Pavement-Tortoise-Fugazi experimental modern rock fans, or the Albert Ayler free jazz fans, etc. [the usual stereotypes, Grateful Dead/Phish jamband fans, etc.].

However, strangly for me, since you are doing something I sort of tried to do with a site I, probably unwisely named "Atomic Radiation" [or something like that to evoke the idea of intense jazz fusion/experimental rock "Lunar Crush-Medeski/Fiuczinski, Unwound "Repetiton" etc., but I don't think the site ever caught the attention of anyone, except the F.B.I.], your tastes seem to diverge with people who have a fatter and more centered sound.

For instance, Jan Hammer to me, was John McLaughlin's equal [though neither probably made classic solo LP's]. I like Larry Young, especially on "Turn it over", maybe not his stuff afterwards besides "Ego" [which wasn't produced as well as Turn it Over"-too thin, yet the production fit-Ego-in a sort of sunset of the early 70's way]. You include Horacee Arnold TALES OF THE EXONERATED FLEA in your A-list but no Mahavishu Orchestra, that seems odd. I can see how someone could prefer Larry Young over Jan Hammer, but then to love Herbie Hancock as your A-list implies as much as you do and not fully appreciate how great Jan Hammer was from the late 60's to mid 70's seems strange.

To me, Larry Young was kind of wild and sloppy which is good, but Jan Hammer, like John Medeski, on "Lunar Crush" at least, had/has that more brilliant focused edge in his prime, he could use notes more than noise-lot's of stuff on "Turn it over" is just noise, which is good in an extreme way.

So where I would differ from you mainly is the Jan Hammer thing over Herbie completely (if not Larry), and I'd have Lunar Crush (Medeski) on the A-list, plus, as a centered fellow that I am, probably besides Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu's first two Lp's and maybe something vintage with Jan Hammer from the 70's [Horacee Arnold TALES OF THE EXONERATED FLEA, perhaps?] I'd really not have much more jazz on my list besides Jean-Paul Bourelly "Trippin'", "Rock the Cathartic Spirits:Vibe Music and the Blues" [A-list] and the 1962-1968 Monk recordings: Monk's dream, Criss-Cross, Underground, It's Monk's time.

I have some general comments to the "kozmigroov" genre, as (sort of) defined by the bands reviewed. I see that most of the bands are linked to what is commonly called jazz. However, the genre also has some appearent common denominators with at least some music that is grounded in rock (if not much more than that these bands use rock drum kit and electric bass). A lot of this music falls into the wide definition of "progressive rock". Be aware, however, that they do not necessarily fall into the commonly used *narrow* definition of "progressive rock", which is more or less synonymous to "symphonic rock".

http://www.gnosis2000.net/ and http://www.gepr.net/ are important sites to visit for this kind of music. The progressive sub-genres that are most related to "kozmigroov" should be, from the top of my head, zeuhl and kraut-rock. Noticable zeuhl bands are Magma, Weidorje and Offering. The most kozmigroovy bands from the Kraut scene could be Can, Amon Düül II, Embryo and Popol Vuh.

Well worth your time.

If you haven't come across it already, you might like to to check out the recently released (UK) Miles_Gurtu album. That is, Robert Miles and Trilok. It may well be the modern kosmikgroov highlight of the year. But don't just take my word for it:

The Guardian Friday 20 February 2004
'And its a real grower, with grooves sounds and atmospheres that get right under your skin'.

Jazzwise March 2004
'Miles_Gurtu sizzles with the synergy between the leaders keyboards and Gurtu's grooves'.

The Independent Sunday 22nd February
'music with focus and brains'

The Times 'EYE' Saturday February 21st
'this airy blend of keyboard atmospherics and percussion polyrhythms sounds new and remarkable'.

Metro
…strange and extraordinary album. Musical cross-fertilisation, done right, is a terrific idea, and this shimmying, funking album proves it.

Evening Standard
…intelligent electronica with live-improv input

Great site. I've been looking for information on this particular kind of music for a long time, without knowing the concept of "kozmigroove". (That word sounds silly in my ears, but OK). I just learnt about it from an excellent article on "progressive" (or whatever) music: See http://www.gepr.net/genre2.html

Some bands not covered here should be checked out, as I feel they fit in very well. First of all, the bands that the aforementioned article classify as "zeuhl". In particular Magma (for instance, the pieces _Kohntarkosz_, Mekanik destruktiw kommandoh_ and _Theusz hamtaahk_), and the related bands Offering and Weidorje. Also, the German band Popol Vuh (for example the album _In der gärten pharaos_). Outstanding bands that fit comfortably along the artists/bands mentioned here, and also fit the description of "kozmigroove" very well. Fundamentally spiritual music - definitely, ...though I can't pinpoint how or why.

I would also recommend diving into Charles Mingus' _The black saint and the sinner lady_. And hell, why not mention 70s Franco Battiato while I'm at it. A couple of bands within the Kraut and Canterbury genres also have something in common with the music covered on this site.

I'm looking forward to reading!

hi, and thank you for this amazing site! i have been using it as a reference ever since i learned about it a few months back. i am not sure how to go about doing a review for you, so i am just going to forward this blurb from dustygroove.com that pretty well sums up this fully kozmigroove chico borraro piece. oddly enough they have sealed copies of the original for less than the u.k. reissue. and no, i do not work for dustygroove i just happened upon it while i was listening to the lp, which i bought in a collection a while back, but had yet to fully digest it. trust me, this lp is right up your alley. here you go:

2.
Chivo Borraro -- Buenos Aires Blues (aka Blues Para Un Cosmonauta) (reissue) . . . LP . . . $8.99 (Item: 78504)
Catalyst, 1977 Condition: New Copy View Cart
Beautifully spiritual material from this little-known Argentinian player -- the great Horacio "Chivo" Borraro, equally talented on tenor sax and keyboards. The session's got a post-Coltraneish approach to the material, with long modal lines, and spiralling righteous solos. Most tracks have electric piano or keyboards, but the rest of the group is acoustic -- in a manner that's similar to Italian sessions of this nature. Borrarro's got a great tone on tenor, and the record's a good one if you dig some of Gary Bartz's early work, or the Latin-tinged material by Gato Barbieri. Titles include "La Incasion De Los Monjes", "Mi Amigo Tarzan", "Cancion De Cuna Para Un Bebe An 2000", and "Lineas Torcidas". US issue of the album Blues Para Un Cosmonauta. (From the Jazz LP (A-D) page.)

best wishes. charlie
